Apr 16, 2014 | News

The CEO Platform for Green Growth in the MENA region (“The CEO Platform”), a business leadership group that brings together business leaders and champions of green growth to engage with regional and global policy makers, held its inaugural founders meeting in Dubai on April 14, 2014

The meeting was opened by the Chairman of the CEO Platform as well as Waleed Salman, Chairman of the Dubai Green Economy Partnership and Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, DEWA.

The meeting focused on the operating framework of the platform, as well as the first steps required to create a collaborative and effective body to tackle environmental issues and climate change. The platform agreed upon its key areas of focus, which include energy, water and waste, and pledged their commitment to work closely together in exchanging information and experiences from around the region.

The Chairman emphasized that the CEO Platform should be a mechanism to achieve green growth following the shared vision of the public and private sector across the region. The platform aims to catalyse this change, building on commitment and the innovative efforts of business leaders and governmental actors in the MENA region.

Waleed Salman, Co-Founder of the CEO Platform, Chairman of the Dubai Green Economy Partnership and Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, DEWA, said:

“We all share a vision; we all want to drive sustainability and deliver green growth. In the MENA region, there is a growing business opportunity around green growth and there are clear goals, targets and objectives being put in place. For the first time in Dubai, we have announced the World Green Economy Summit, which is only the starting point for Dubai’s green economy. In line with HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision, the UAE is moving towards a green economy, and I am very optimistic about Dubai’s and the region’s green growth. The establishment of the Platform is a clear step forward.”

During the discussions H.E. Hakima El Haite, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, in Charge of Environment, Morocco, highlighted that the initiative of the CEO Platform is not a choice but a must because we have to change the model of development and create a new vision – it is a unique opportunity for the region.

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group (ADSG), whose mission is to promote sustainability management in Abu Dhabi by providing learning and knowledge sharing opportunities for government, private companies and not for profit organisations, have also expressed their interest in partnering with the CEO Platform and exchanging best practices and experiences.
