AFED and CEO Platform
On January 23 a memorandum of understanding was signed to promote green growth across the MENA region.
Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) and the CEO Platform for Green Growth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abu Dhabi on January 23, 2014 to develop green economic solutions in the region. The program is initiated and supported by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea, under the leadership of Dr. Corrado Clini, Director General of the Ministry.
The agreement was signed by Ms. Stefania Romano, Chief of Operations of the CEO Platform and Head of the Italian Trust Fund in the REC) and Mr. Najib Saab, AFED Secretary General, during a ceremony hosted by the Italian Pavilion at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi. The event was attended by several high-level dignitaries, including H.E. Giorgio Starace, Ambassador of Italy to the UAE, Dr. Thani Al-Zeyoudi, Head of the Directorate of Energy and Climate Change at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to IRENA, Ms. Roula Majdalani, Director of Sustainable Development and Productivity Division at UN-ESCWA, and Mr. Tareq Emtairah, Executive Director of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE).
Ambassador Starace stressed the importance of cooperation between Italy and its partners across the Arab region, pointing out that Abu Dhabi provides the perfect place to launch this agreement. Dr. Al Zeyoudi highlighted UAE commitment to advance Green Growth agenda and conveyed support to the initiative.
Ms. Romano underscored the importance of the agreement for advancing mobilization towards a greener economy across the region, through partnerships and concrete actions. Saab explained that the accord will help bringing together the business community around a growth agenda which advances corporate environmental responsibility practices.
The CEO Platform in collaboration with AFED will engage business leaders in the Arab world to drive progressive green growth agenda in the region and to contribute to the global policy discussions, paving the way to a more predictable investment environment for sustainability.
