Interlocking Initiatives, Gathering Stakeholders and Walking the Green Growth/Sustainability Talk

The CEO Platform for Green Growth in MENA hosted its first roundtable discussion in Venice, Italy on 29-30 September, 2014, bringing together CEO Platform founders, partners and members with exclusive high-level dignitaries and speakers from the MENA region, Europe and the U.S. to discuss regional green growth challenges and possibilities, as well as to exchange experiences and provide updates on recent policies and noteworthy developments.

The two-day long CEO Platform roundtable was organized against the backdrop of the Sustainable Development Academy’s (SDA) 2014 Course for Sustainability, sensibly interweaving the two regional initiatives that have been supported by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) since their inception.  This decision proved a remarkable catalyzer for mobilising targeted actions through committed stakeholders who share the same vision and for assisting in cementing and nurturing inter-regional dialogue and knowledge-and-best practices transfer. This year’s Guest of Honor was H.E. Princess Sheikha Fadyah Saad Al Sabah of the House of Sabah of Kuwait who participated as Chairperson of the Al-Saad Foundation for Knowledge and Scientific and led a delegation comprised of senior executives from the aforesaid Foundation and from the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR).

Following the opening message by Dr. Francesco La Camera, acting Director General of IMELS, the roundtable kicked off under the steering of Stefania Romano, Chief of Operations of the CEO Platform and Director of the Italian Trust Fund (ITF) within REC. Specific brainstorming sessions on three cross-cutting, key themes of interest for all present stakeholders – water, energy and sustainable public procurement – were carried out, thus setting the stage for the development of detailed discussion papers that will be further developed by specialists and business leaders into policy papers and action plans, shared with regional businesses and actors, and brought into international processes to advance green, sustainable growth in the MENA region and beyond.

Dr. Khaled Irani, co-Founder of the CEO Platform, Senator and former Energy/Environment Minister of Jordan, wrapped up the fruitful roundtable that ultimately led the CEO Platform and its backers to confront specific issues head on, to outline practical steps undertaken so far, and to discuss a clear, agreed-upon action plan for the way forward.
